Alternative assessment within the era of AI

Vocational Futures

Comparative judgment is a promising alternative assessment method for evaluating competencies and performances, leveraging an iterative process to achieve high reliability and foster collaborative, reflective practices. Enhanced by digital tools, this approach offers significant potential to transform assessment methods and improve learning outcomes, especially important within the GenAI era where the focus on process needs to be emphasized.

This presentation draws on STEM education research to showcase practical applications of comparative judgment, including its use in peer assessment for students and teachers. Examples highlight how this method supports formative assessment, critical thinking, and professional learning communities within the era of AI.

Providing an international perspective, this session offers insights from Sweden, where comparative judgment is being explored within European educational practices. Participants will learn how to adapt these methods to diverse educational contexts and enhance assessment frameworks to improve teaching and learning globally.

Placing students at the heart wellbeing

Wellbeing

Our presentation will highlight how we have transformed a low socio-economic school to become a model of Inclusion and wellbeing excellence.

  • Using Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) Framework and leading change in inclusive education, we have successfully embedded wellbeing at the core of our approach, ensuring that all stakeholders - students, staff and families are engaged in the journey in creating an inclusive, supportive environment for all.
  • Attendees will gain insight into how MTSS Framework serves as the foundation for inclusion of all students and families. We highlight the importance of staff development both education support staff/teacher assistants and teachers if pivotal in gaining an understanding of the complex needs of students in their care.
  • Using evidence-based research and practices, we have been able to effectively manage challenging student behaviours, while fostering a culture of respect, compassion and personal growth.
  • Participants will leave with practical tools and a deeper understanding of how wellbeing, positive behavior supports and inclusive leadership, can create an environment where all students thrive.

Generative AI that gets it: Building pedagogically-sound AI

The Evolving University
  • Large Language Models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT are designed to be helpful assistants, and their capabilities are rapidly improving
  • There is huge potential for using LLMs in education, but current models often help too much and don’t align with effective teaching practices.
  • Just as we have shaped current LLMs to be helpful, we can shape LLMs to behave as effective educational agents.
  • We will discuss what properties make a "good" pedagogical LLM, such as: Self-efficacy facilitation, reducing over-helpfulness, and Socratic Guidance.
  • Participants will see a live demo of a real pedagogical LLM (used over 500,000 times) and compare its behaviour to standard models like ChatGPT. These models can also run locally on institutional premises, addressing privacy concerns.
