Kellie Kremmer, Education Officer - State Boarding, Department of Education, Queensland

Kellie Kremmer has been a passionate educator in a variety of learning settings for over 28 years and has worked with the most gifted and talented students to our most vulnerable. She is currently working for the Queensland Education Department developing consistency of practice guidelines. Her substantive position is at Western Cape College in Weipa as Head of Campus – Residential. She has spent many years living and working in the remote Indigenous communities of the Lardil people of Mornington Island in the Gulf, Alngith people in Weipa and Wik people in the Cape as well as communities across the Torres Strait. The opportunity to be richly emerged in the differing cultures created a passion for engaging parents/carers as first teachers in the educative process. She understands the value of connections, networks and the willingness to listen deeply to families and communities. Her experiences as a leader in boarding to this point, speak to the challenges and opportunities of supporting students in a living away from home environment and building strong connections with the school learning environment. She has extensive experience working with Indigenous families building community engagement by working in partnership with parents, community and the school to build positive and sustained transitions leading to student engagement in learning. Kellie’s family is her identity. In 2010 Kellie and her husband adopted two beautiful boys Naty and Bereket from Ethiopia.  Kellie brings a unique perspective to her role as Head of Campus, Western Cape College Residential. She has the privilege of raising someone else’s children through adoption and the experience of being the parent of a boarder. Kellie understands that family is deeper than a set of mutual characteristics. Having a multi-race family brings culturally rich experiences and a healthy sensitivity to appreciate and celebrate difference.
