In recent years, the UK has made significant strides in expanding full-fibre services, supported by consistent investment, leading to enhanced coverage. As infrastructure strengthens, increasing customer adoption is a key focus, encouraging investment and monetization in a virtuous circle. To ensure optimal growth in coverage and customer adoption, identifying and executing the optimal solution is crucial. Open Access has the potential to address this challenge effectively.

Platinum Sponsor presentation from CommScope.
There are many planning and technical decisions that impact CapEx, OpEx and network reliability in a new FTTH deployment. CommScope supports our customers by analysing more than 30 of these decisions and explaining the pros and cons of each answer—regardless of the supplier chosen. In this session, we will concentrate in two of these decisions, one regarding active equipment and the other regarding the passive equipment. These two variables are particularly important in any of today’s FTTH network deployments.
Regarding the question of active equipment, the industry is evolving from GPON to XGSPON technology. This new technology offers significantly higher bandwidth to end users, but typical residential customers don’t yet use applications that require the full potential of this technology, making it a balancing act between cost and performance for the service provider. In this discussion, we will explore how to achieve this balance by increasing capacity offered to the subscriber gradually, as needed, and not expending unnecessary CapEx before it’s needed.
In regard to passive equipment, the right decision must take into account the growing need to cover lower density areas, a need that’s become particularly acute in parts of the U.K. where small villages or individual homes are more dispersed. To meet this need, centralized splitting topologies have been adopted in the U.K. along with the use of distributed splitting. However, neither approach provides optimal cost efficiency for these lower-density areas, which come with high labour costs in their deployment. We will share a different answer, one that employs optical taps—a practice not routinely used in the U.K., but one that has proven itself in other parts of the world. Our discussion will cover the significant savings taps can provide, not only in material costs but also in labour and installation.
