Dr. Yiwei Chen is a pioneering voice in China's rare disease community and the founder of Wonder Sir, the country's leading patient-centered education and innovation hub for rare diseases. For nearly a decade, Dr. Chen has been at the forefront of patient-driven innovation. Through Wonder Sir, she created China's first rare disease comic book series, launched the first systematic scientific training program for patient community leaders, and established the first rare disease research network initiated by a patient community in China. Collaborating with nearly 100 clinical experts and 100 patient communities, her work has reached an online audience of over 10 million people, transforming the landscape of patient education in China. Her impact is exemplified by the remarkable journey of the Chinese Lesch-Nyhan Syndrome (LNS) community. Starting with a single family in 2017, Dr. Chen and Wonder Sir helped build the community from the ground up. In just six years, it grew into the largest LNS research cohort in the world, driving the creation of a national medical network and the world's first LNS diagnostic consensus initiated by a patient community. A researcher with a Ph.D. from Heidelberg University and over 20 years of experience in genetics, Dr. Chen is a sought-after speaker who bridges the worlds of science, industry, and patient advocacy. She is a key connector between the Chinese and global rare disease ecosystems, regularly sharing her insights at international forums.
