Dr. Akwar is the Science Advisor for Veterinary Sciences and AMR at the International Centre for Antimicrobial Resistance Solutions (ICARS). He leads the development and implementation of technical initiatives designed to generate evidence on AMR mitigation and enhance preventive health strategies in animal and environmental sectors and across the One Health spectrum. He has worked with the Canadian government, Global Center for Health Diplomacy and Inclusion, International Vaccine Institute, Food and Agriculture Organization and World Organization for Animal Health, and contributed to surveillance systems, capacity building, and cross-sectoral approaches to health threats. He is a veterinary epidemiologist and One Health specialist with expertise spanning infectious diseases, vaccines, zoonoses, sustainable solutions to AMR mitigation, and health systems strengthening within a One Health framework with a focus on low- and middle-income countries. He holds a DVM degree from Ahmadu Bello University, and a PhD in epidemiology from the University of Guelph, Canada.
