Professor of Tropical Medicine and Traveller Medicine at the University of Amsterdam, Martin Peter Grobusch leads the Center for Tropical Medicine and Travel Medicine at Amsterdam UMC. A specialist in internal medicine, infectious diseases, and tropical medicine since 2000, he combines clinical care, research, and education in his work. Alongside his team, he provides comprehensive care for travellers — from pre-travel consultations to managing illnesses acquired abroad — while also mentoring young clinicians and overseeing research to advance new vaccines and treatments for tropical diseases such as malaria. His international career has spanned renowned institutions including the Charité University Medical Center (Berlin), the University of the Witwatersrand (Johannesburg), and the Institute of Tropical Medicine at the University of Tuebingen. His research focuses on malaria, tropical viral infections, tuberculosis, and the development of innovative interventions, and he works in partnership with clinical centres across Africa, Asia, and South America. He holds visiting and adjunct professorships in South Africa and Germany, directs research units in Gabon and Sierra Leone, and supervises PhD students from around the world. A recipient of the prestigious Eijkman Medal, he is a fellow of several international societies and plays a key role in global research consortia advancing tropical and infectious disease science.
