Ilena holds an M.Sc. in Biology from the University of Milano-Bicocca and a Ph.D. in Molecular and Experimental Medicine from Humanitas University. Her research focused on tumor immunology, first exploring T cells in leukemia, then macrophages in neuroendocrine tumors. Before her Ph.D., she worked on innate immunity and infection, and during her post-doc, she studied adipose stem cells and breast cancer. In December 2020, Ilena joined Frontiers as a Journal Specialist in Frontiers in Immunology. From May 2022 until December 2024, she was a Journal Manager within the Life Sciences Portfolio, overseeing Frontiers in Antibiotics, Bacteriology, Parasitology, and Protistology. From January 2025 until April 2026, she was the Journal Manager within the Biosciences Portfolio, overseeing Frontiers in Cellular and Infection Microbiology. As of April 2026, she is Portfolio Manager overseeing the launches of new Journals at Frontiers and a portfolio of existing Journals.
