Cornelius Schmaltz | Strategic Science Adviser

Cornelius Schmaltz is currently the Strategic Science Adviser at the European Health Emergency Preparedness and Response Authority (DG HERA, European Commission). Since 2006 he has held various positions at the European Commission in the area of health research and innovation and from 2019-2024 as Head of the Accelerator unit at the European Innovation Council and SMEs Executive Agency (EISMEA). Cornelius received his MD and his training as board-certified paediatrician from the University of Freiburg/Germany. Following a postdoc at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston and a fellowship in Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York, he was a programme manager for Medicine at the Volkswagen Foundation in Germany prior to joining the European Commission. Cornelius also holds an M.A. in International Relations from the Free University in Berlin and is the co-author of several papers in peer-reviewed journals, including Nature Medicine and Nature Genetics.
