After graduating in 1986, Sarah worked in a small animal practice in the Blue Mountains for 18 months. She returned to the University of Sydney to complete a 3 year residency in small animal surgery and a master’s degree. Following her residency, Sarah was senior registrar at the University of Sydney (Camperdown and Camden) from 1991 to 1998. Sarah also ran a surgical referral practice bimonthly in Tasmania for 20 years. Sarah gained membership (1993) and then fellowship (1996) of the Australian College of Veterinary Scientists in small animal surgery. She was a founding director of the Animal Referral Hospital (ARH) in 1999. ARH grew to include multiple sites around Australia and the ARH group became part of the Greencross Animal Referral and Emergency Network (AREN) in 2019. AREN is the largest specialist and emergency veterinary network in Australia. Sarah's interests include all areas of small animal surgery – soft tissue, orthopaedics, neurosurgery, oncology and reconstructive surgery. She has two talented daughters and a gorgeous grandchild and she is addicted to snow skiing.
The panel will explore the critical importance of pain identification and management, with a focus on the affective components of pain and its short- and long-term consequences if not managed appropriately. They will also share their recommended pain recognition and assessment tools for both acute and chronic pain in cats and dogs.
Explore the complex pathophysiology of osteoarthritis pain and why a multimodal approach to therapy is essential. The goal is to reduce pain and improve function, thereby enhancing quality of life — effective pain management allows a foundation for other elements of multimodal therapy, including regular exercise. Learn more about the role of early intervention in supporting mobility and joint health, and how it may slow disease progression and delay irreversible damage.
