After graduating from the University of Queensland, Eleanor spent time in mixed general practice in Lilydale followed by a small animal rotating internship at the University of Melbourne. After returning to the University of Queensland as a clinical anaesthetist for a few years, she undertook a residency in veterinary anaesthesia and analgesia at the University of Glasgow, Scotland. Eleanor became a Diplomat of the European College of Anaesthesia and Analgesia in 2017 and she now works in private practice in Melbourne. Eleanor enjoys many aspects of her work but has a special interest perioperative patient care and multimodal analgesia including locoregional anaesthetic techniques.
The panel will explore the critical importance of pain identification and management, with a focus on the affective components of pain and its short- and long-term consequences if not managed appropriately. They will also share their recommended pain recognition and assessment tools for both acute and chronic pain in cats and dogs.
Learn about acute pain management in companion animals through the lens of the AVAAAP Perianaesthetic Analgesic Guidelines — a practical, evidence-based resource designed to support veterinary professionals. This session will cover pain physiology and how this knowledge can be used to guide analgesic strategies, the use of various analgesic techniques to optimise pain relief during anaesthesia and surgery, and the use of pain recognition and assessment tools to monitor analgesic effectiveness, helping to improve pain management and patient outcomes.
