My PhD in Entrepreneurship has exposed that altruism affects the recognised drivers of business intentions, particularly for socially purposed businesses (which veterinary practice is). Motivated to untangle and answer important questions about veterinarians and veterinary business, I may have revealed some root causes of the 'elephant in the room' regarding the challenges in doing veterinary business well. After graduating as a veterinarian, I started in emergency veterinary medicine. I continued for 24 years as a rural practice owner with production animals and horses as a solid part of my caseload. I became an on-plant veterinarian for the federal government before moving to the 'village' of Adelaide. Soon after, I became one of the first ten academics appointed to build the new veterinary school at The University of Adelaide.
