Identity Week America - Day 2 @ 11:30

Mastering EMRTDs: Ensuring data integrity and authenticity in travel documents

This presentation explains why NFC chip verification is becoming a cornerstone of high-assurance digital identity checks. As fraud, identity theft, and remote onboarding risks increase, electronic travel and identity documents remain a critical root of trust. By cryptographically reading and validating the chip in an ePassport or electronic ID card, organizations can verify that the data has not been altered, originates from a trusted issuer, and belongs to a genuine, non-cloned document.

The session will outline the key principles behind chip verification, including how it enables high-assurance identity proofing by ensuring data integrity, cryptographic authenticity, and resistance against cloning or tampering through certificate-based validation and active or chip authentication. It will also address practical challenges such as remote versus on-site verification, device trust, interoperability limitations, damaged chips, and emerging attack scenarios. Participants will gain a clear view of how chip-based document verification strengthens fraud prevention, regulatory compliance, and trust in digital identity processes.

Looking forward meeting you in D.C.
