Jinte Middeldorp, Department Head Neurobiology & Aging, Biomedical primate research centre

Dr. Jinte Middeldorp is a neuroscientist and Head of Department at the Biomedical Primate Research Centre (BPRC), where she leads research on brain aging, neuroinflammation, and the interaction between infectious diseases and the nervous system. Her work focuses on understanding how systemic factors, including viral infections, affect brain health and contribute to neurological disorders such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. Dr. Middeldorp has a broad background in neuroscience, with experience working with human tissues, cell cultures, and animal models. Her PhD research focused on astrocytes in health and disease, and during her postdoctoral work she investigated how age-related changes in blood plasma influence the brain. At BPRC, she collaborates closely with infectious disease and imaging specialists to study the neurological consequences of SARS-CoV-2 infection in non-human primate models. Her research has demonstrated neuroinflammation following infection, and ongoing work aims to understand how viral infections may contribute to long-term neurological symptoms and potentially influence neurodegenerative processes. Through her work, Dr. Middeldorp seeks to bridge experimental models and human disease, generating insights that can inform future research on infection, brain health, and aging.
