Managing the Complexities of Digital Transformation
Service Providers today come in many forms—fixed and mobile telecom, cable, content aggregators, CDNs, social networks, web portals, internet video (OTT), app stores, device ecosystems, enterprise IT, cloud computing, and more. With devices, services, and content becoming increasingly internetworked between the home, work, mobile, and Internet, the time for digital transformation is now – especially on the cusp of 5G. However, today’s service providers face challenges ahead, including developing sustainable business models, quality customer experience, revenue management and profitable services. In fact, without intelligent business operations and modern, flexible IT capabilities, service providers will miss over 70% of growth opportunities attached to 5G, according to TM Forum research. While the role of industry best practices and technology standards is often debated, applying the right mix of established and developing collaborative assets can have positive impacts on overcoming challenges in product development and operations, from the executive’s corner office to the programmer writing an individual software module. Many industry groups have emerged in this expanding landscape, offering a wide array of standards and programs. Unbiased and proven “big picture” framework models can often help teams understand how to best develop and transform. Today, TM Forum members are collaborating to build the Open Digital Framework to guide the way toward intelligent operations for the 5G era -- building on the Forum’s Open APIs, Open Digital Architecture and the Frameworx suite of standards.
