Alex Domling studied Chemistry & Biology at the Technische Universitat Munchen (TUM). He performed his Ph.D. with Ivar Ugi and his postdoc - funded by a Feodor Lynen stipend from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation - with double Nobel Laureate Barry Sharpless. After his habilitation at TUM, he became a professor at the University of Pittsburgh, then chair of the department of drug design at the University of Groningen, and most recently ERA Chair at the Palacky University. He also started several biotech companies. He is the author of >300 papers and >70 patent applications. His current lab works according to the mantra 'Automation + Miniaturization = Acceleration' on the ERC-funded project of engineering an autonomous drug discovery platform called AMADEUS.
The integration of cutting-edge technologies is reshaping the scientific discovery process, and chemistry stands at the forefront of this transformation. In our laboratory, we combine the precision of miniaturized reaction technologies with the predictive power of artificial intelligence to unlock new possibilities in molecule discovery and optimization. Using acoustic droplet ejection (ADE) technology, we perform thousands of chemical reactions daily at nanoliter scales, generating vast datasets that fuel AI-driven predictive models. This seamless fusion of automated synthesis, high-throughput analytics, and machine learning enables a data-rich, hypothesis-driven approach to discovery. In this talk, we will present how such platforms can revolutionize early-stage drug discovery. We will share insights on integrating AI with miniaturized experimental systems to accelerate the development of innovative solutions, highlighting practical applications and the future potential of this approach. Join us to explore the synergy between advanced instrumentation and AI in transforming the modern lab into a discovery powerhouse.
