Lab layouts that prioritize builder convenience and reduced budgets create some of the most persistent safety issues. These become ingrained components of everyday workflows that can repeatedly put researchers at risk. While some aspects are fixed, others can be rectified with adaptations that make worker safety the priority, and long-term, often cost less, too. From traffic flow and storage placement to equipment accessibility and shared spaces, small, deliberate changes to a lab's physical environment can have an outsized impact on the safety and wellbeing of the people working in it every day.
