Dwayne Henry is a 30-year plus employee of Montgomery College who is currently the instructional lab manager of chemical and biological sciences at the Takoma Park/Silver Spring, MD campus. After completing his BS and MA degrees in biotechnology in 1994, he spent one year doing toxicology studies at Oncologix, a cancer research company in Gaithersburg, MD. He then joined Montgomery College's Takoma Park/Silver Spring campus as its sole biology instructional lab coordinator, where he helped organize and develop its current biology laboratory academic setups, developed and modernized its biology labs physical structures/equipment, and upgraded the biology lab safety procedures. Once promoted to instructional lab manager, he would then become the college’s only manager of both biology and chemistry labs, at which time he would then repeat those same feats for its Takoma Park/Silver Spring campus chemistry labs. He has also started the campuses' first laboratory safety committee and partners with various organizations to provide basic laboratory skills and job training for individuals with various disabilities. Dwayne was also an essential member of the biology, biotechnology, and chemistry lab planning and development committee for Montgomery College's new Catherine and Isiah Leggett Math and Science Building. The building opened on August 31, 2024. Additionally, Dwayne has received his certification in management and supervision from the American Management Association, as well as certificates in diversity management, organizational leadership, and conflict resolution. During the fall of 2021, Dwayne was named co-chair of the Montgomery College college-wide Biosafety and Infectious Materials committee, and then later co-chair of the college-wide Chemical, Physical, and Biological Hazards sub-committee. During this time, he also accepted an invitation to become a member of the American Chemical Society's (ACS) Committee for Chemical Safety, in which he is now an executive board member. He is also the ACS Division of Chemical Health and Safety's (CHAS) 2-Year College Lab Safety Community of Practice Chair, the incoming ACS CHAS 2026 Chair-elect, and a member of the ACS CHAS Peer-Led Workshops Mentorship Team. The mentorship team advises/mentors/trains graduate students in lab safety as well as how to conduct efficient and effective laboratory safety workshops. Lastly, Dwayne is also a member of Lab Manager Magazine’s editorial board and Senior Leadership Circle. He has been featured in and written a variety of articles as well as has presented at various conferences such as the Lab Manager Leadership Summit, the Laboratory Design Conference, numerous American Chemical Society conferences and meetings, Association of Laboratory Managers Conference, and the Eastern Analytical Symposium.
his session explores why safety onboarding in laboratories must go beyond a simple checklist to truly protect people, research, and innovation. Attendees will learn how to foster a culture of safety in new hires that adapts to evolving technologies, diverse teams, and emerging risks. Through real-world examples and forward-looking strategies, the presentation highlights proactive training, continuous engagement, and shared responsibility as key drivers of safe, productive lab environments. Participants will leave with practical approaches to integrate safety into daily laboratory operations—ensuring that today’s labs, and those of tomorrow and beyond, remain places where experimentation thrives without compromising well-being.
