Sebastian Stiessel, Business Development Manager Green Hydrogen & Carbon Management, Fraunhofer UMSICHT

Dr.-Ing. Sebastian Stießel is a Senior Business Development Manager at Fraunhofer UMSICHT in Oberhausen. In this role, he is responsible for transferring market-ready developments from applied research to industry, particularly in the fields of green hydrogen and carbon management. Since early 2025, he has also been coordinating international research projects in the MENA, APAC, and North America regions. Dr. Stießel studied industrial engineering with a focus on energy and process engineering at the University of Duisburg-Essen and, during this time, worked at various industrial companies, including ThyssenKrupp, Babcock, and Bilfinger. After completing his studies, he earned his Ph.D. (Dr.-Ing.)from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at Ruhr University Bochum in collaboration with Fraunhofer UMSICHT, with a thesis titled “Multicriteria Evaluation of Cross-Industrial Systems.” As a research associate and group leader, he worked on projects including Carbon2Chem®, CO2SYN, and enerPort, and led the scientific developments for the systemic evaluation of Power-to-X and CCU. As managing director of the Leading-Edge Cluster for Industrial Innovation (SPIN), he was responsible from 2021 to 2025 for the strategic development of the cluster, its scientific focus, and the development and initiation of new projects on hydrogen, Power-to-X, CCU, digitalization, and artificial intelligence on behalf of the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Industry, Climate Protection, and Energy of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia.
