Each year the CTI supports several hundred bottom-up R&D projects, executed in collaboration between companies and non-profit research institutions. It funds the services provided by for example; the Federal Institutes of Technology, conventional universities, and the Universities of Applied Sciences (UAS) etc, paying the salaries of the researchers. Its initiative venturelab has set out to sensitize entrepreneurship in Switzerland by offering various course modules. Furthermore, CTI Start-up promotes the development of new technology-based companies with a high growth potential by providing free professional coaching. The two main focuses of CTI Life Sciences are biotechnology (CTI Biotech) and medical technology (CTI MedTech). CTI Life Sciences promotes innovation in these sectors by building bridges between the laboratory and the market; In a CTI Life Sciences project the partnering enterprises benefit from the scientific contributions of the institutes. SMEs with limited research budgets may tap into academic R&D services and infrastructures to bring their innovative products faster to the market. Moreover, CTI Life Sciences funds discovery projects. The CTI has funded 4,500 projects since 1986. Since 1996, more than 1,000 start-up proposals have been evaluated, with over 120 teams being awarded the prestigious CTI Start-up Label.
