Clement Choo | Veterinary Radiation Therapist
Brisbane Veterinary Specialist Centre

Clement Choo, Veterinary Radiation Therapist, Brisbane Veterinary Specialist Centre

I am a Radiation Therapist with Brisbane Veterinary Specialists Centre, I work closely with a team of Veterinary Radiation Oncologists, Vet Surgeons and Medical Physicists in preparing the computed radiation treatment plans and delivering the treatments on our new TrueBeam Linear Accelerator. I have over nine years of experience operating the Varian TrueBeam system. I qualified in 2016 and started my career as a RT with Genesis Care in Melbourne working in human radio-oncology and left as the Assistant Unit Leader with GenesisCare Ringwood in February this year.  Before joining the vet industry, my main interests and focus on human clinical oncology was a specialised RT technique called Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy and Stereotactic Radiosurgery.  This technique is now possible in Brisbane for pets through the recent installation of the TrueBeam machine at the BVSC. I am keen to bridge the gap between human and veterinary radiotherapy. I’m a passionate advocate for a collaborative and transdisciplinary approach to veterinary oncology. I believe Radiation Therapy with the new system has a big potential and role to play in achieving great quality of life outcomes for our pets. Using the Stereotactic RT technique, we have seen better outcomes and a significant reduction in side effects in treatments than what was previously achievable. More importantly we can now achieve this with shorter courses of 3 to 5 treatments.Part of my work at the BVSC involves updating and educating vets on the possibilities in quality of life and treatment outcomes that can be achieved through Stereotactic Radiotherapy. In the human world Radiation Therapy is constantly progressing and evolving due to recent advances in Artificial intelligence and advances in imaging capabilities. I was fortunate to be involved with the implementation of some new techniques and technological processes in the human world at GenesisCare Ringwood such as Stereotactic Ablative Body Radiotherapy for Prostate Cancer.  I believe Veterinary RT is only at the opening chapter of a very big story in the field of Oncology.
