Revisiting Routine Prescribing: Unintended Consequences of Standard Equine Drug Protocols

armaceutical therapies are fundamental to modern veterinary practice and are often essential for managing pain, inflammation, infection, and surgical intervention. When used appropriately, these medications are highly effective. However, routine or repeated prescribing can also have unintended physiological consequences that may influence recovery and long-term health.

This session will review commonly used equine drug classes, including:

  •             Corticosteroids

  •             Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)

  •             Gastric ulcer medications

  •             Antibiotics

  •             Anthelmintics

  •             Sedatives and general anaesthetic agents

    With discussion focused on:

  •             Effects on gastrointestinal function and microbiome balance

  •             Impacts on nutrient absorption, metabolism, and excretion

  •             Polypharmacy and interaction risks

  •             Systemic physiological effects

Practical strategies will be explored to support safer use, minimise avoidable side effects, and promote physiological recovery when pharmaceutical intervention is clinically necessary.
