Anita is an experienced veterinary nurse and Employee Engagement Officer at Veterinary Specialist Services, a multi-site referral hospital group in Australia where she encourages staff wellbeing, diversity and professional development.  She holds advanced qualifications in surgery and emergency/ critical care and is a Registered and Accredited Veterinary Nurse.    Internationally credentialed as a Certified Veterinary Pain Practitioner and Veterinary Technician Specialist in Anesthesia and Analgesia.  Anita is the President of the AVTAA and founder of N.I.T. Nurses In Training and volunteers on many committees to ensure the progression of the industry.  She also is the Director of Clinical Education for MILA international.

Feeding Tubes - placement and maintenance

Should a feeding tube be placed? What type of tube should be placed?  These are regular questions that get asked in veterinary hospitals.  This session will cover these questions and the placement of different types of feeding tubes and why one would be chosen over another, different foods that can be placed down these tubes, how the tube can be stop from blocking, and how to make it more comfortable for the patient during feeding.  We will also touch on resting energy requirements for the patient.

1. Reviewing when a feeding tube should be placed in small animals

2. Identifying different types of feeding tubes that can be placed

3. Placement of naso-oesophageal tubes, nasogastric tubes, oesophageal tubes

4. How to maintain different feeding tubes after placement
