Gemma is a Programme Manager in the new Sustainable Chemistry team at the Royal Society of Chemistry, developing programmes to advance sustainable science and its practice.
Gemma obtained a PhD in Chemistry at the University of Manchester. Her academic research focused on the design and application of microporous materials for capture of toxic gases. Prior to joining the RSC in late 2024, Gemma led an R&D team at a biotech startup, developing specialty chemicals and ingredients from agricultural byproducts. She led industry-partnered projects to formulate and commercialise new products, and managed circular economy R&D projects for multinational corporations to transform waste streams into novel bio-based ingredients.
This talk will outline recent work at the Royal Society of Chemistry in the area of sustainable labs and sustainable science more broadly, including perspectives from practising scientists. It will also highlight some wider frameworks, tools and resources as well as initiatives driven by the research community
