Matt Fouch, President, Subsea Data Systems

Matt Fouch currently serves as President and Co-Founder of Subsea Data Systems, a new startup dedicated to the development of SMART (Sensor Monitoring And Reliable Telecommunications) Cables. He is also Chief Scientist and Co-Founder of Samara/Data, a science, technology, and software consulting firm with offices in Washington, DC and Los Angeles, CA. Prior to his move to the government and private sectors in 2014, Fouch was a tenured Professor of Geophysics at Arizona State University and later a Staff Scientist in Geophysics at the Carnegie Institute for Science in Washington, DC. He has published over 50 scientific papers in peer-reviewed literature. He spent the bulk of his research career deploying and maintaining earthquake and volcano monitoring equipment on 4 continents. He is the co-inventor of a unique ruggedized seismometer in development for NASA missions and other applications on Earth, and is deeply involved in the development of the first SMART repeater sensor system and associated data management infrastructure. In 2007, Fouch was recognized by President George W. Bush for exceptional leadership at the frontiers of scientific knowledge and the fusion of research and teaching via the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE). In addition to instrument development, Dr. Fouch partners with a number of U.S. federal agencies, including the Department of Defense, NOAA, and NASA, to provide subject matter expertise and support on a broad range of initiatives focused on protecting the nation and its citizens.
