Dr. Markus Herrgård is Chief Technology Officer at the BioInnovation Institute (BII) in Copenhagen. BII is a non-profit with the vision to support world-class life science innovation for the benefit of people and society through funding and creation of new startups. BII operates an incubator with lab and office space, and has a portfolio of over 130 startups and company creation projects in human and planetary health. Dr. Herrgård has a broad background at the life science and engineering interface focusing on data science and high-throughput biology. After obtaining his PhD in Bioengineering from UC San Diego, he joined the pioneering start-up, Synthetic Genomics, to develop and apply genomics and genome writing technologies. Later he led the development of the infrastructure platforms at the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Biosustainability – a world-leading research center focusing on solving sustainability problems using biotechnology. Markus joined BII in 2020 and is responsible for BII’s science and technology strategy, research ecosystem relationships, lab infrastructure, and IT/data platforms.
