Materials have played a key role in rupture technologies throughout industrial history. Amid today’s climate, geopolitical, and humanitarian crises, global entities recognize the need for a strong materials innovation ecosystem to drive the clean energy transition. Self-driving laboratories (MAPs) integrate combinatorial synthesis, high-throughput characterization, automated analysis, and machine learning to accelerate materials discovery. However, challenges remain, including integration into components, geographical concentration, and the need for new researcher skills. EU-MACE will create an inclusive ecosystem, combining digital and material expertise with market needs, laying the foundation for a center of excellence in advanced materials for a stronger EU.
