Amy Lo, Senior Director and Senior Principal Scientist, Genentech, Inc

Amy A. Lo, MD, MS, is Senior Director of Histopathology and Senior Principal Scientist–Pathologist at Genentech, where she leads strategy for three pathology core laboratories supporting drug discovery and development across multiple therapeutic areas. She also provides pathology expertise to oncology-focused drug development teams. Dr. Lo is board-certified in anatomic and clinical pathology, with subspecialty expertise in gastrointestinal pathology, and is also board-certified in molecular genetic pathology. She brings more than a decade of experience spanning biopharma, academic medicine, and clinical diagnostics. Dr. Lo leads histopathology automation initiatives designed to address both high-throughput and highly customized needs. Her work focuses on reducing staff hands-on time while improving throughput, reproducibility, cost efficiency, and operational scalability. These efforts have expanded support for increasingly complex and growing research needs, including spatial omics. She also develops customized tissue-based assays that inform disease biology, biomarker strategy, therapeutic development, and clinical trial execution. Dr. Lo maintains her clinical expertise through her appointment as an Adjunct Clinical Associate Professor at Stanford University.

Day 2: 29th October @ 11:20

Automating Histopathology to Accelerate and Scale Workflows—from Routine Applications to Spatial Omics

Automated embedding and sectioning alleviate key bottlenecks in tissue embedding and microtomy. This presentation will demonstrate how routine and customized applications can be integrated into workflows that perform comparably to manual methods while supporting diverse assays and digital solutions. Performance metrics will include reductions in technologist hands-on time of up to 92%, with no impact on pathologist interpretation or quantitative readouts. It will also address limitations, adaptations required for complex tissues, and the broader benefits of automation, including improved reproducibility, cost efficiency, and scalability. Together, these advances enable flexible, high-quality histopathology support—including customized spatial omics workflows—across research and clinical settings.
