Alex Karki, Traffic Engineer, Infrastructure Planning, Hornsby Shire Council

Alex Karki is a Traffic Engineer and Transport Planning specialist with nearly two decades of experience across NSW local government, Transport for NSW, consulting and major infrastructure delivery. His career has included traffic and transport roles with Hornsby Shire Council, Hunters Hill Council, City of Canada Bay, Waverley Council, Burwood Council and the City of Sydney, together with senior transport roles on major NSW projects including Sydney Light Rail and projects involving Transport for NSW. Alex also has specialist expertise in parking behaviour, parking policy and parking demand management. His Master’s by Research in Transport Planning and Engineering at UNSW examined how drivers make parking decisions, applying econometric and discrete-choice modelling to investigate the influence of parking pricing, time restrictions, parking search time, walking distance and willingness-to-pay. His research on Parking Behaviour of Burwood Town Centre was presented at the 2015 Australian Institute of Traffic Planning and Management (AITPM) National Conference in Brisbane, with related parking-choice modelling research also presented at the 2015 Conference of Australian Institutes of Transport Research (CAITR) in Melbourne. Combining academic research with extensive hands-on local government experience, Alex brings a practical and evidence-based approach to traffic engineering, parking strategy, development assessment, road safety, active transport, construction traffic management and urban transport planning. He holds a Bachelor of Engineering (Civil, Honours) and a Master’s degree in Transport Planning and Engineering from UNSW and is a qualified Senior Road Safety Auditor.
