I have been working at Transport for London for over 25 years. This predominantly in the areas of Traffic Signal Control and Traffic Engineering. My predominant focus has been to improve the design and operation of signal controlled installations for cyclists and pedestrians, and to make these as safe adn attractive to these users as possible. This has involved the introduction of new equipment over the past decade such as the Pedestrian Countdown signals, the small bicycle specific signals and associated detection systems. This involved extensive off-street and on-street trials and DfT approvals which has then been incorporated into TSRGD, the National Design Standards and Specifications, including relevant TOPAS standards, meaning that these can be used across the UK in a consistant manner. I am a long serving board member os TOPAS, ensuring that these standards are used as the basis for all TfL equipment standards and that the supply chain installs approved products and can maintain these. I am a member of the Traffic Systems Working Group (TSG) of Adept, which provides a knowledge sharing network across the industry. I am a Fellow of the Institure of Highway Engineers (IHE)
TOPAS compliance isn’t just a box to tick - it’s a foundation for smarter, safer infrastructure. This session unpacks why aligning with TOPAS standards is crucial for innovation, interoperability and the long-term reliability of UK roads.
