[M7] 5 Nov (AM) - Differentiated instruction made easy: effective support for diverse learners

In the dynamic landscape of education, time and resources are often in short supply, yet the need for effective support for students with additional learning needs remains paramount. This workshop aims to empower educators, offering a curated collection of resources and strategies most often used by Learning Enrichment Teachers at the Australian International School, Singapore.

Focused on the power of consistency, educators will explore essential techniques for identifying and addressing a variety of student needs, maximising intervention efforts with minimal time investment. Through efficient observation methods like time sampling, participants will gain valuable insights into student progress without adding undue burden to their workload.

Central to this workshop is the concept of differentiated instruction (DI), a universally beneficial approach that recognises the varied learning styles, interests, and abilities in any classroom. Dispelling the myth that DI is overly complex and time-consuming, this workshop will provide educators with a toolkit of differentiation tools and support plan templates to implement flexible, effective teaching methods. From support-modified units of work to simplified assessment modifications, these resources empower educators to create inclusive classrooms that cater to the diverse needs of every learner without reinventing the wheel.

As educators, we come together to strengthen support and foster understanding. This workshop serves to provide vital resources for those at the forefront of education by equipping educators with practical tools to nurture the potential of every student, one step at a time.

Participants will:

  • Recognise and label student behaviours associated with additional learning needs, in order to facilitate and implement more appropriate support strategies
  • Develop efficient techniques for observing students using time sampling, leading to better understanding of student progress without excessive time investment
  • Acquire practical strategies for differentiating tasks, modifying units of work, and creating support plans to foster inclusive learning environments
