Ulrich Hansen is a Principal Cloud Hardware Storage Architect at Microsoft Azure. In his current role, Ulrich is focusing on advanced engineering projects for storage devices to ensure next-generation SSDs and HDDs meet the demanding requirements of Azure’s Cloud solutions. Prior to joining Microsoft, Ulrich held senior positions in HDD and SSD product planning and engineering at Hitachi GST and Western Digital. He started his career in Management Consulting, followed by a role in product management at Dell’s Enterprise Systems Group.
Ulrich holds a Master of Electrical Engineering degree from RWTH Aachen, Germany, and an MBA degree from The University of Texas at Austin.
Enhancing the security and management capabilities for next-generation SSDs is a key priority for Microsoft Azure. This talk shares the motivation, and specific direction Microsoft Azure is taking for new SSD capabilities to more comprehensively secure SSD firmware and protect SSD data-at-rest, while efficiently managing Azure’s very large multi-vendor fleet of SSDs. Capabilities addressed include I3C, Streaming Boot / Secure Firmware Recovery, Dual Firmware Signing, OCP LOCK for at-rest encryption key management, PQC, and Caliptra RoT integration.
