Mariana Hugo Borges Barreto Silva, Postdoctoral Fellow, University of Ghent

Mariana Hugo Silva is a Postdoctoral Researcher at Ghent University, working closely with Pfizer to provide mechanistic insights into mRNA-LNP vaccines. She earned her PhD from the University of Limerick, Ireland, conducting research across academic and industry settings including Johnson & Johnson and Trinity College Dublin. Her doctoral work focused on developing innovative long-acting injectable formulations for small molecules, aimed at improving patient adherence through controlled drug release. With a strong foundation in formulation science and industry experience, Mariana’s current research advances understanding of large-molecule delivery systems in biopharma.

How LNPs Change Under Stress: Analytical Insights for Translational mRNA Medicine

  • Antibody Engineering using Machine Learning assisted Yeast Surface Display enables affinity maturation of an immune checkpoint blocker with low sequence intrusiveness.
  • Deep Learning models are trained on context specific biological data to infer new variants not observed by sequencing and accurately predict their properties.
  • in vitro antigen binding and in vivo therapeutic assessments confirms the efficacy of the approach.
