Alsya Affandi, Lead Scientist, CSO Immunara, Amsterdam UMC

Alsya Affandi is a Lead Scientist at Amsterdam UMC and Chief Scientific Officer (CSO) at Immunara, an academic spinout, with a strong background in immunology. He focuses on harnessing antigen-presenting cell biology for next-generation biologic therapies, with an emphasis on improving anti-tumor immune responses through targeted antigen delivery strategies. At Immunara, Alsya leads scientific strategy and business development for novel single-domain antibody (sdAb)–based platforms aimed at enhancing immune activation and improving therapeutic outcomes across cancer and other disease areas. His work bridges academic research and translational development, drawing on experience from Amsterdam UMC, as well as previous affiliations at UMC Utrecht and Boston University. He has contributed to multiple high impact publications, including in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) and Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), reflecting his work at the interface of fundamental immunology and translational medicine. He also holds one patent in the field of immunotherapy and is committed to developing innovative therapies that address current limitations in cancer treatment and improve patient outcomes.

APC-targeted immune-priming technology using sdAb for cancer therapy

Despite the breakthrough of immune checkpoint blockade, the majority of cancer patients still fail to benefit due to a lack of cancer-specific T cells. Although various immunization approaches have been explored to increase T cell responses, most rely on non-targeted antigen delivery systems, leading to limited efficacy. Using our single-domain antibody (sdAb) platform, we selectively deliver cancer antigens directly to antigen-presenting cells (APCs), thereby inducing stronger T cell responses compared with conventional methods. This novel immune-priming technology has the potential to significantly boost anti-tumor T cell responses and promote cancer elimination by harnessing the patient’s own immune system.
