Bio
Renato Covelo was born in Sao Paulo, Brazil and also holds a Spanish citizenship. He is graduated in Law since 1997 and received a master’s degree in International Law at the University of São Paulo in 2008. Mr. Covelo is passionate about aviation since early age and has also been a Private Pilot since 1999.
Mr. Covelo has more than 20 years of experience in legal private practice and public companies in aviation industry. He has worked at Machado, Meyer, Sendacz e Opice Advogados from 2001 to 2008 where he was head of the aviation law practice. He was the first President of the Aviation Law Committee of the Brazilian Bar Association – São Paulo Section. In 2008 was a co-founder of Azul Airlines in Brazil as Legal Director and General Counsel and was a member of its Executive Committee.
Mr. Covelo joined Avianca in December of 2016 as Legal Vice-president and General Counsel. During the last five years, Mr. Covelo held various positions in the Company that included Legal, Compliance, Governmental Relations and acted as Interim President & CEO in 2019. Since October of 2019, Mr. Covelo is the head of our Human Resources department and in December of 2020 was appointed as Chief People & Talent Officer.
Mr. Covelo has also been awarded on several occasion by the publication "Aviation Lawyers – Expert Guides", from Euromoney Legal Media Group, as one of the main expert lawyers in Aviation Law in the region.
In his free time, he is a bicycle rider, Formula 1 addicted and great supporter of his soccer team Corinthians. Renato has been married to Adriana for 22 years and is a proud father of Isabela and Natalia and travelling together is their passion.
Job description:
As Chief People & Talent Officer, Mr. Covelo is responsible for developing and executing Avianca´s human resource strategy in support of its overall new business plan, specifically in the areas of succession planning, talent management, recruiting, training and development, and compensation. He is also co-leader for our culture change.
