Excavation is one of the riskier aspects of civil engineering and can be both costly and disruptive if a strike occurs. Over the years there have been a number of innovations designed to improve the safety and speed of the excavation process, whilst minimising its environmental impact and reducing cost across the board. One such innovation was that of suction excavation, a relatively new technique designed to improve excavation speed whilst reducing associated health and safety risks. Instead of using machinery to haul out soil and risk contact with a buried utility, a high-powered suction system is instead deployed to remove all unwanted materials, both solid and liquid, from an excavation. When using a Suction Excavator, high pressure air is blasted into the excavation to loosen material and break any compacted material into smaller pieces. Then the suction hose will be positioned over the material, which is then deposited into the hopper on the rear of the Suction Excavator. This method prevents any contact being made with a buried utility, avoiding costly repair bills, and more importantly removing the risk of an injury or fatality. Due to the suction excavator technology being relatively low-impact and now destructive, it has fast become the preferred excavation method for most contractors.
