Dan Lehmann, Senior Energy Analyst, gridcog

Dan is a Senior Energy Analyst at Gridcog, where he helps customers maximise the value of our modelling software while working alongside the product team to ensure we can easily reflect the latest regulatory, commercial, and technical setups across both Front-of-Meter and Behind-the-Meter projects in the GB energy market.

Previously, I worked at EO Charging as a Product Manager, focused on unlocking the value of large EV fleets in GB flexibility markets, as well as leading partnerships with route-to-market providers. I also have experience in energy consulting across the energy value chain working with investors, regulators, and utilities spanning renewables, BESS, and broader electrification. I pursued a Master’s in Renewable Energy at Durham, and am passionate about how energy markets, technology, and commercial models can come together to enable the energy transition.

The Money Behind the Meter: Valuing BTM BESS in Great Britain

  • GB has some of the highest electricity costs in Europe, making BTM optimisation increasingly important for C&I customers.
  • BTM is more complex to value than front-of-meter storage - the economics depend on the load, connection, tariffs, other flex assets onsite and available revenue streams.
  • BTM BESS can do more than arbitrage a tariff: it can unlock new revenues and potentially defer costly network reinforcement at the same site changing the charging strategy as required across the year
  • P442 and P415 are opening up additional value streams for BTM assets.
  • So, what is a BTM battery actually worth?
  • We’ve modelled a broad range of BTM projects in Gridcog, across different load profiles and customer archetypes, comparing simple optimisation with full-stack optimisation.
  • Results:
    • Energy bill savings / indicative IRR
    • £/MW/year across different site archetypes
    • Value uplift from moving beyond simple tariff/network arbitrage to full-stack optimisation
