Maike completed her veterinary degree in Germany. Instead of working as a practicing veterinarian and fascinated by immunology, she decided to spend some time at the NIH, Frederick, USA, to train with Dr. S. K. Durum. She then moved to Cambridge, UK, to carry out her PhD work with Prof. D.T. Fearon and her postdoctoral studies with Prof. G.M. Griffiths. In 2016 she started her own lab at the CRUK Cambridge Institute where she is now a Senior Group Leader. Maike’s research aims to elucidate the role of the developmental Hedgehog signalling pathway in the immune system in health and disease. Her lab is also running a clinical research study at Addenbrooke’s Hospital and is committed to translating basic research findings into novel immunotherapeutic approaches. Throughout her career Maike has been awarded prestigious fellowships including the German Academic Scholarship Foundation, the Medical Research Council as well as a Sir Henry Dale Fellowship jointly funded by the Wellcome Trust and the Royal Society. In 2023 Maike was awarded a Wellcome Discovery Award (8 years, £3.9mio). In addition, Maike has received funding from Cancer Research UK, European Commission Horizon 2020, Addenbrookes Charity Trust, The Gene and Cell Therapy Catapult, Cambridge Enterprise and Cancer Research Horizon.
