Nuno Carinhas is based in Basel and works in bioprocess development, with a strong focus on upstream process intensification and translating innovative technologies into scalable biomanufacturing solutions. He holds a degree in Biology and a PhD in Biotechnology, both completed in Portugal.
Intensified upstream processing offers multiple routes to improve productivity and manufacturing flexibility, including intensified fed‑batch and perfusion-based continuous or hybrid strategies. We outline an approach that combines high-density inoculation with fit‑for‑purpose development workflows: clone selection that accounts for process-mode effects; main-stage robustness to reduce variability and product quality shifts; and transfer-ready scale-up enabled by aligned small-scale models and clear minimum technical requirements. Media/feed optimization and enhanced monitoring and control are applied to strengthen robustness and consistency across molecules and facilities.
