Jackie Miller | Director Oncology Navigation
SKCCC-Jefferson Health

Jackie Miller, Director Oncology Navigation, SKCCC-Jefferson Health

Jackie Miller is the Director of Oncology Navigation at the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center (SKCCC) –Jefferson Health. SKCCC is part of an 32-hospital academic health system spanning two states and the largest in the Philadelphia region.  It is comprised of eight cancer treatment centers with a main NCI-designated Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Jackie oversees clinical and non-clinical navigation services. Over 8,000 people diagnosed with cancer receive SKCCC navigation services each year. A strategic leader in oncology operations, Jackie is dedicated to eliminating barriers in the cancer care continuum. By integrating clinical expertise with operational foresight, she has transformed how patients move through the healthcare system, ensuring seamless transitions and sustainable program growth.  Key Professional Accomplishments

  • Pioneering Transition of Care Excellence Jackie successfully designed and implemented a Transition of Care (TOC) Nurse Navigation program. This initiative addressed the critical gap between inpatient discharge and outpatient oncology treatment, establishing a rigorous framework that ensures patients receive continuous clinical oversight and advocacy during their most vulnerable transitions.
  • Early Intervention via Data Integration Recognizing that timely care is paramount in oncology, Jackie developed a streamlined process to identify new patients through pathology reporting. This proactive identification model allows the navigation team to engage with patients immediately following a diagnosis, significantly reducing "time-to-treat" metrics and improving the overall patient experience.
  • Financial Strategy & PIN Implementation An early adopter of evolving healthcare mandates, Jackie pioneered the integration of Principal Illness Navigation (PIN) reimbursement. By successfully operationalizing these billing codes, she secured a new revenue stream that supports the long-term sustainability of navigation services, proving that high-touch patient advocacy can coexist with fiscal responsibility.
She is the recipient of the 2019 American Cancer Society Lane Adams Quality of Life Award, the 2018 Cure Extraordinary Healer Award for Oncology Nursing and the 2017 Virtua President’s Award Jackie is the founder of Camp Oasis, a South Jersey camp for children who have a parent diagnosed with cancer. Now in its 18th year, the camp hosts 50-60 children biannually.

The Human Heart of High-Tech Care: Reimagining the Nurse Navigator in the Age of Precision Medicine

the field of oncology continues to explore cutting-edge breakthroughs in AI, genomic sequencing, and digital transformation, it’s easy to lose sight of the human being at the center—the patient. While industry leaders focus on the data and the drug, the Oncology Nurse Navigator (ONN) never loses sight of the person behind the diagnosis. This presentation brings the ONN’s story to life as the “human translator” of biotechnology—turning intimidating data into understandable choices, calming fears, and ensuring that the promise of precision medicine is matched by genuine, personalized support.

Objectives: By the end of this presentation, participants will be able to:

  •  Identify the three primary psychological and logistical barriers patients face when transitioning from standard care to high-complexity interventions.

  •  Analyze how the navigator role mitigates disparities in access to precision medicine by addressing social determinants of health (SDOH) that digital platforms often overlook.

  •  Formulate a model for integrating biotech stakeholders (pharma, diagnostics, and tech) with the nursing navigation team to ensure innovations enhance, rather than disrupt, the patient experience
