Mário Chaves, Chief Operating Officer of TAP Air Portugal since May 2023, is a specialist in
operational efficiency and restructuring, with extensive leadership experience in the aviation
sector. Between March and May 2023, he was General Manager of Portugália Airlines.
Previously, he served as Chief Operating & Commercial Officer and Accountable Manager at
Grupo SATA, where he led the restructuring and modernization during the pandemic.
Between 2017 and 2019, he was interim CEO of Cabo Verde Airlines, in representation of the
Icelandair Group. In addition, he held leadership roles at Icelandair, where he was Vice
President of Operational Efficiency and General Director of Operations for Icelandair
Ground Services. He has also held senior positions at IATA, such as Director of Flight
Operations Efficiency. He also has extensive experience as a Pilot, Captain, and Flight
Instructor, with more than 8,000 flight hours, mostly on Airbus A320 aircraft.
