Mark Butlin, Lecturer, Author and Consultant in Education Law, University of Southern Queensland

After studying law and education at university, Mark Butlin taught Legal Studies in secondary schools for almost a quarter of a century. This helped to generate his interest in education law. He worked his way up to Head of Secondary in a number of schools and finally to principal of a large independent school in Queensland. Mark has been a member of the Australia and New Zealand Education Law Association (ANZELA) since its inception, and has attended many of their annual conferences along with many other education law seminars for over thirty years. He is on the Queensland State executive committee of ANZELA. Mark works as a lecturer at the University of Southern Queensland in the School of Education, primarily in assessment and education law. His master’s dissertation was in principals’ understanding of education law and how that impacts their daily work, and has published in this area. Mark is now completing a Doctor of Philosophy qualification in education law, focusing on school teachers. He has recently completed writing a comprehensive text ‘Law and Ethics for Australian Teachers’ as lead author (with two fellow authors) on education law in Australia through Cambridge University Press.
