Catherine McClellan, Deputy Chief Executive Officer (Assessment), Australian Council for Educational Research

Catherine is the Deputy CEO, Assessment at the Australian Council for Educational Research, and has over 20 years of experience in education and assessment, in a variety of research and operational roles. At ACER since 2019, Catherine oversees ACER’s work in assessment development, psychometrics, and marking as well as leading innovation in relation to ACER’s assessment methods and psychometric research. She is currently serving as a member of the Measurement Advisory Group for the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) as well as a board member of the Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation (Ofqual) in England. Catherine’s measurement background spans educational survey assessments at the state, national, and international levels through individual proficiency examinations for purposes including course completion, university admissions, college credit, and professional licensure.  Catherine received her Ph.D. in Research Evaluation and Methodology from the University of Florida. Her research specialty over the last 15 years has been primarily on how human markers evaluate complex performance assessment tasks, with a focus in teacher effectiveness and video scoring. In all her work, Catherine brings a strong focus on the application of research and techniques to solve practical problems in educational measurement.
