Premier Alan Winde is a seasoned politician and entrepreneur. He has been serving as the Premier of the Western Cape since 22 May 2019 and was re-elected for a second term on 13 June 2024.
Hon.Winde's political journey began in 1996 when he was elected as an independent councillor to the South Cape District Council. He joined the Democratic Party (now the Democratic Alliance) and was elected to the Western Cape Provincial Parliament in 1999. Over the years, he held various leadership roles, including Chief Whip of the official opposition and Provincial Finance Chairperson. In 2009, he was appointed as the Western Cape Minister of Finance, Economic Development and Tourism. He later served as the Minister of Economic Opportunities and, in 2018, as the Minister of Community Safety.
In September 2018, the Democratic Alliance selected Winde as its candidate for Premier of the Western Cape. Following the party's victory in the 2019 provincial elections, he was sworn in as Premier on 22 May 2019, succeeding Helen Zille . He was re-elected for a second term in June 2024. He describes himself as “innovative, disruptive, and caring,” reflecting his approach to leadership and governance.
