Why Australia? Why NSW? Why Now?

Australia has one of the highest rates of rooftop solar uptake in the world: more than 4.3 million homes with solar on the roof, and only a fraction of them with a battery so far. The federal government has committed an estimated $7.2 billion to closing that gap. The commercial ecosystem deciding which products fill it gathers at Smart Energy, ICC Sydney, every May.

The Market at National Scale

Australia's energy system is in one of the fastest transitions of any developed market, with funding increasing across every layer, from rooftop solar to grid-scale storage and from residential batteries to commercial and industrial deployments.

The single biggest opportunity is the battery attachment gap. More than 4.3 million Australian homes already have rooftop solar. Fewer than 600,000 have added a battery. That gap represents millions of households that already believe in solar, already have the roof space and inverter infrastructure and are the easiest possible sell for a battery retrofit.

  • $7.2 billion committed to the federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program, expanded from an original $2.3 billion allocation in December 2025, with no income test on the rebate itself.
  • 500,000+ home batteries installed across Australia to date. The market is still only scratching the surface of the existing solar-owning household base.
  • AEMO's 2026 Integrated System Plan calls for close to 40GW of dispatchable storage nationally by 2050 , underpinned by the federal government's 82% renewable electricity target for 2030.
  • NSW's February 2026 long-duration storage tender contracted 1.17GW and around 12GWh across six projects, the largest single storage procurement in the state's history.
Open market access. Under ChAFTA, Australia has progressively removed tariffs on Chinese-manufactured solar and battery hardware, and has not imposed the anti-dumping or countervailing duties that exporters currently face in the United States and European Union. At a time when major export markets are becoming more restricted, that combination of open access and rapidly scaling public subsidy is one of the more attractive volume-growth opportunities available to international suppliers right now.

New South Wales: The Priority Market

NSW is Australia's largest state economy and runs its own Renewable Energy Zone program on top of federal incentives, a state-level stack that few other markets can match. It's also the state Smart Energy calls home.

NSW Home Energy Saver Program

$557 million total funding. Interest-free loans up to $15,000 (10-year term) for households with combined taxable income up to $210,000, plus discounts up to $4,000 for eligible lower-income households.

Peak Demand Reduction Scheme (PDRS)

NSW's ongoing incentive scheme for businesses installing battery storage to reduce peak grid demand, covering commercial and industrial systems.

NSW's Renewable Energy Zones

NSW has designated five Renewable Energy Zones under its Electricity Infrastructure Roadmap. In February 2026, a single tender round contracted 1.17GW and around 12GWh of long-duration storage across six projects, the largest storage procurement in NSW history.

New England REZ Northern Tablelands
Central-West Orana REZ Central West
South West REZ Riverina / South West
Hunter-Central Coast REZ Hunter Valley & Central Coast
Illawarra REZ Illawarra

Why Sydney and Why ICC Sydney

Seat of NSW Government

State energy ministers, EnergyCo and AEMO's NSW operations are all based in Sydney.

Australia's Largest State Economy

Greater Sydney accounts for a major share of the country's commercial and industrial electricity demand.

Direct International Access

Sydney is one of the best-connected gateways in Australia for international exhibitors and delegates.

ICC Sydney

Purpose-built exhibition and convention precinct in Darling Harbour, opened 2016, with 33,000sqm of exhibition space and an integrated Sofitel hotel.

Why 2027: The Commercial Inflection Point

The window between current investment approvals and Australia's 2030 capacity targets is the commercial inflection point. Contracts are being signed now, approved product lists are being built now and the distribution agreements that determine which brands participate in the residential and commercial boom are being made now.

For international suppliers, the practical bottleneck is rarely production capacity. It's market access: distribution agreements, local certification and relationships with the installers, EPCs and developers who actually specify and bid the equipment. Smart Energy 2027 is where those relationships are built.
