Ordnance Survey is the operator of the National Underground Asset Register (NUAR), which is a government digital service, improving the efficiency and safety of the way we install, maintain, operate and repair our buried infrasture, by providing instant access to a secure and standardised map of the underground pipes and cables in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland.
There are around 4 million kilometres of underground pipes and cables in the UK, and 60,000 accidental strikes on these every year - costing the UK economy £2.4 billion per annum and putting workers’ safety and lives at risk. Once complete, NUAR will provide data from over 600 public and private assest owners. With 360 onboard so far, including most of the major energy and water providers, several major telecommunications companies, transport organisations, and local authorities, the map includes over 3.2 million kms of pipes and cables, which covers 80% of the known underground assets.
At Highways UK 2026 we will showcase how NUAR is helping asset owners and their contractors who plan and carry out excavations on underground assets to do their jobs more effectively and safely through providng instant access to standardised data, reducing the number of organisations to be contacted and speeding up the average six days to get information as well as simplifying the previously complex process of aligning varied formats and scales.
