Angola Cables

An electrical engineer by profession, António Nunes has over 20 years of experience in the international telecom industry.   He was CEO of Angola Cables until 2020, a position he held since the company was established in 2009.   Nunes studied at the Technical University of Dresden in Germany. Following his studies, he was part of the construction team of the Macau international airport as well as the Hong Kong international airport. In 2000, he relocated to Luanda, Angola where he worked in the creation of UNITEL, the largest mobile operator in Angola today.   As Angola Cables CEO, Nunes was responsible for positioning the company as a leading player in the international telecom wholesale market.     Under his leadership, the company engaged and completed several successful projects. These included the commissioning of three submarine fiber optic cables: WACS, Monet, and SACS, and two data centers: AngoNAP Luanda, Angola, and AngoNAP Fortaleza, Brazil.      SACS is the first and fastest submarine cable in operation, linking Africa to South America with the lowest latency, and presently provides a more direct routing for internet traffic in the Southern Atlantic region.    Under Nunes’ leadership and vision, Angola Cables has established itself as a vitally important ecosystem for the digitalization of the Southern Hemisphere. This critical infrastructure consisting of submarine cables, data centers, and several POPs has created an advanced digital ecosystem within the Trans-Atlantic region. The foundation of this vision was based on tapping into the economic potential between Latin America and Africa and where Angola could position itself favorably in the future digital economy.     Nunes has also been instrumental in securing Angola Cables’ membership of the World Economic Forum (WEF) and was most recently nominated to the Data Economy: Power 200 List of Most Influential Leaders in the Data Economy.     As an active executive in the global telecom industry, Nunes is a regular speaker and participant in industry events and related forums.
