After a B.Sc. in Biotechnology at the RWTH Aachen University (2006), Johannes studied in Sweden and the USA during his masters, which he finished with honors in 2009. He finished his first PhD focusing on recombinant protein expression in plants in 2013, then starting as a group leader for high-throughput process development in 2014 at the Fraunhofer Institute for Molecular Biology and Applied Ecology IME, Germany. In 2015 Johannes was promoted to head the department of Bioprocess Engineering (BPE), supervising process development and scale-up. 2017 he received a second PhD in bioprocess engineering at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and successfully completed his habilitation in biotechnology in 2020 at the RWTH Aachen University. As of 2022, Johannes is a full professor for downstream processing at BOKU University, Vienna, where he continues to model, design and scale up bioprocesses in the context of plant molecular farming and conventional host systems. Johannes is Editor-in-Chief of Transgenic Research and member of several editorial boards as well as chair/member in various scientific organizations such as German Society for Chemical Devices (DECHEMA), European Federation of Biotechnology (EFB), European Plant Science Organisation (EPSO), International Society for Plant Molecular Farming (ISPMF). He has published more than 80 peer reviewed articles with more than 3500 citations and an h-index of 35.
