Mark Everard, Emeritus Professor of Paediatric Respiratory Medicine, The University of Western Australia

Mark Everard is Emeritus Professor of Pediatric Pulmonology at the University of Western Australia.  Prior to moving to Australia, he had been a Clinical Professor in Sheffield, UK.  His clinical practice and research have focused on airways disease with a particular interest in chronic bacterial infections involving the airways.  The most well-known example is that associated with cystic fibrosis but his work has also highlighted the large burden of such diseases in the ‘healthy population’ and those with conditions such as bronchiectasis and COPD.  Amongst his many roles he Chaired the European Respiratory Society working party report on the diagnosis and treatment of persistent bacterial bronchitis. His work has encompassed the whole gamut of studies from bench-top to bedside in an attempt to understand and address the strategies used by the ‘usual suspects’ to both subvert the normal health airways microbiome and to persist and continue to drive chronic inflammation in the face of challenges such as antibiotic therapy.  Developing effective diagnostic and therapeutic strategies in this area remains one of the great unmet needs in both developed and developing countries.
