The National Dark Fibre Facility (NDFF) is an UKRI-EPSRC National Research Facility, established in 2014 to enable researchers to develop the underpinning communications technologies for the future internet. NDFF provides a dedicated software defined optical fibre network at the physical layer (OSI Layer 1), with access points at Universities of Bristol, Cambridge, Southampton, Surrey, UCL and NPL, and interconnects to major internet exchanges, including the UK 5G+ Exchange at Slough and international connections at Harbour Exchange. NDFF offers an open physical infrastructure at national scale to support diverse areas of communications (optical/wireless/quantum communications), metrology (time and frequency distribution), sensing, machine learning, optical/quantum computing, immersive and virtual reality research, etc.
