Dr Michael Chapman
Director of Research and Clinical Trials, NHS Digital
Michael is responsible for NHS Digital's work with researchers, ensuring that data can be used safely, efficiently and transparently to improve health.
He has over a decade’s experience in enabling use data from electronic health records for health research and for improving the quality of healthcare services, and in ensuring that patients and the public are informed about and engaged with this work.
Until early 2021 he was Director of Health Informatics at Health Data Research UK's Cambridge scientific site, working across the Wellcome Sanger Institute, European Bioinformatics Institute and University of Cambridge. Prior to that he held leadership roles at Cancer Research UK, the National Cancer Research Institute and the National Cancer Intelligence Network. Michael is also a trustee of the Health Quality Improvement Partnership and is a member of the UK Biobank Strategic Oversight Committee. He has previously been a member of a range of health service and government advisory groups relating to the use of NHS data.
